Two Months Out

TWO MONTHS OUT

As I’m typing this, Sophie has fallen asleep on my shoulder, so I’m only using one hand. In the last few weeks our household has succumbed to the flu, strep throat, and currently an ear infection. I don’t know why we’re so lucky, but Sophie is doing great at 24 weeks though (5 1/2 months for the laypeople).

Sophie

This is what she looks like not sleeping on my shoulder.

We’re about two months out from the release of our EP, “My Way in Manila”, and I’ve been ferociously sending out e-mails; looking for reviews or any kind of inkling that what we’ve made in the last three years wasn’t completely in vain. It’s crazy that we create from deeply personal levels only to end up looking for validation from external sources. Don’t get me wrong. I’m proud of what we’ve made. But I’m also not the “true poet” who burns his poetry after writing it. I don’t think anyone in this industry is.

After releasing our first two singles, we have gotten a couple of nice reviews though. Travis Erwin of LAonLock.com called 2Handz a “passionate and funky little groove” that “reminded me of Nathaniel Rateliff brand of Americana Soul a bit.” While Bee Delores of B-Sides & Badlands said, “Robert’s voice crumbles mountains. Whereas, Krissy’s is like a hawk swooping through the air.” She called us “a dynamic duo that’ll bowl you over”. We also got some nice placements on a few playlists (but of course purchasing music is always best and goes a long way in supporting artists).

SO WHAT’S NEXT?

Our third single is scheduled to be released on June 16th, and it’s a cover of Cole Quest & The City Pickers’ “My Name is New York”. I love this city and the artists who inhabit it. I wanted to record this song ever since I heard it because I think it perfectly captures the grit of what it takes to be a New Yorker and what the legacy of Woody Guthrie means for songwriters and musicians. You can actually Pre-Save it here.

Then I’ll be travelling to Governor’s Island where I have the honor of running the Big City Folk stage at the 10th Annual Porch Stomp on June 17th. The stage will feature Ali Aslam, A Million Sweethearts, Cordelia Stephens, Apollo Flowerchild, Mel & The Tall Boys, Chris Q. Murphy & The Automat, The Belle Curves, Gawain & The Green Knight, and us. The music starts at 11AM.

Porch Stomp is in its 10th Year and we’re happy to say we’ve been there since day one. This is our first year running a stage.

After that I think we’ll squeak out one more single in July and then a full band show to coincide with the EP release on August 4th. Easy peasy., lemons queasy.

But seriously, thank you so much to everyone and anyone who has been following us, listening, coming to shows, or even just opening and reading an e-mail. It means a lot to us, especially in a time where so many things are trying to get your attention and entertainment is at everyone’s fingertips. Thank you.

Until next time,

Robert
